On both, I usually run the master between fairly and very high, say 2-3 o'clock, the input gain on the low side and use the boost to finesse my stage volume. I like a tone that is warm but still crisp and mostly clean. Again, these gk's are great working class amplifiers, and for the $150 paid for the backline i could not be happier. The only things I've heard that really trumps these is an SVT CL or II, or some of the super pricy WW or tecamp stuff. I recently played the 700rb-ii while my 800 was being serviced, and while it's a step up in power and response, it did not make a huge difference in my overall tone happiness. I own an 800rb and a backline 600 and think they are both truly great. Which is why I wanted some opinions on where to start.

Or maybe an upgrade would work wonders as some posters above have said? Definitely lots of variables going on here and lots to mess around with, which is kind of daunting. I have an intuition that it may be the pickups/lack of preamp on my bass but I'm hesitant to do anything because I have no experience with that kind of stuff. I play mostly in Drop-D so maybe it's an issue with the set up? That said, if my overall tone would just be a little bit more up front and aggressive all around, it would be killer. Everything on the A,D, and G strings sounds amazing but when I play on the E the sound starts to fade in the mix.especially when playing around 7-12 fret range-kinda sounds like I'm trying to play with blankets covering the cabs and muffling the sound if that makes any sense. I just need something to push it over the top.mostly on the lower notes. When I play just one cab by itself, I end up missing a lot of my tone - ie the punch without the 10s and the low end without the 12s. The hissing is noticeably decreased when I roll the mids back. Other than the hissing out of the 2X10 I think the cabs sound great.I was originally playing through a GK Backline 1X15 with the Avatar 2X10 and it sounded like complete mud. Play in channel B (no distortion) around 1/8-1/4 by my self and 1/2-3/4 with othersĬabs are both 8 ohm.so together they should give out 4 ohm.which is what the amp is rated at. I've also thought about putting a pre amp into my bass to see if that would help.

I like the sound of Gallien Kruegers a lot and am wondering if bumping up to a 700/800 RB would noticeably improve my tone. Also, the amp is really noisy through the 2X10, lots of hiss when turned up - not sure if this is an issue with the cab or the amp. I tried using an equalizer before the Turbo Rat, but all I could get out of it was a highly distorted sound (I use the Rat for a slight overdrive). I'm thinking my main problem may be with the amp, it seems like I don't have a wide range of frequencies on the amp with which to really sculpt my tone. My set up right now is a passive Warwick bubinga corvette into a Turbo Rat played through a Gallien Krueger Backline 600 split between an Avatar 2x10 and a 2X12. If I can just push my sound over the edge, I'd be an extremely happy guy. To my ears, it sounds a little muffled and doesn't stand out quite like I'd like it to.I want something that's really punchy and prominent, and my tone right now just seems a like it's missing that aggressive quality. But I feel like it's missing a certain presence.

Wasn't quite sure where to post this, so hopefully this forum is appropriate.Ĭurrently, I have a pretty decent overall bass tone that I'm happy with.
